Reflectly vs MoodKit (2026): AI Journal vs No-AI Mood Tracker
The MoodKit Team
· 3 min read
In 2019, Reflectly was the future: “the world’s first intelligent journal,” a gorgeous UI, and eventually 82,000 App Store ratings. In 2026 it’s a cautionary tale about what happens after the growth team wins. This comparison is partly about our app, MoodKit (bias declared), and partly about a question Reflectly forces on the whole category: what do you actually want an app doing with your feelings?
What happened to Reflectly
The numbers first, because they’re stark. Rating: 4.6 on the App Store, 4.3 on Google Play (August 2026). Price: about $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Feature development: reviewers and long-term users report nothing meaningful shipped since October 2022, and the app now belongs to Kodeon, a portfolio operator.
The reviews tell the rest. ChoosingTherapy’s assessment found the premium tier barely different from free. Recent Play Store reviews complain that the price is wildly out of step with what the app does, that reminders silently stop working, and that “you can’t do anything without paying.” Waves of account and data-loss complaints stretch back years.
The beautiful UI is still beautiful. It’s just increasingly a museum.

The deeper difference: what touches your feelings
Reflectly’s pitch was always that intelligence would make journaling better. Type your day, get an empathetic response and a prompt. Whether that intelligence was ever much more than rule-based templates is its own story, but the architecture is the point: your entries go through the app’s systems to generate its reactions, and you need an account for any of it.
MoodKit is built on the opposite bet. Nothing you feel is sent to any AI, anywhere. Every insight — the Impact Leaderboard ranking your activities by measured mood effect, the Hidden Patterns combinations, the weekday rhythms — is plain statistics computed on your device. No account exists. The app works offline. When MoodKit tells you evenings with late caffeine cost you half a mood point, you can see the day count behind the claim.
We’re obviously not neutral here. But the anti-AI position isn’t a gimmick; it’s the design constraint the whole app grew from, and in 2026 a lot of people are actively shopping for it.
What Reflectly still does better
Fairness section. Reflectly remains ahead on: writing-first journaling (MoodKit’s notes are short and optional by design), the sheer polish of its onboarding and visuals, and Android support. If daily guided writing is the point for you, an actively-developed prompt journal like stoic. deserves your money before either of us; our Reflectly alternatives list sorts that field.
Our take
It’s hard to recommend paying 2026 subscription prices for an app whose last meaningful feature shipped in 2022. If you love Reflectly’s prompts, at least test the free tier’s limits before subscribing.
If what you wanted from Reflectly was understanding — why the good days are good — that was never really its department. MoodKit’s trial opens every feature for a week: log normally, watch the drivers surface at 3, 7, and 14 entries, and judge the difference yourself. The full field guide is here if you’d rather keep shopping.
Frequently asked questions
Is Reflectly still being developed?
The app still receives maintenance builds, but reviewers and long-term users report no meaningful new features since late 2022, and the app is now run by a portfolio operator rather than its original team. Compare that history against any app you're about to pay for.
Is Reflectly's AI real AI?
Historically, Reflectly's "intelligent journal" was largely rule-based prompts with an AI label. Whatever it is today, your entries are processed to generate its responses. If that idea bothers you, a no-AI tracker avoids the question entirely.
Is MoodKit cheaper than Reflectly?
Yes, at US list prices: Reflectly runs about $9.99/month or $59.99/year, while MoodKit is $39.99/year with a 1-week free trial, or a one-time $79.99 Lifetime that Reflectly doesn't offer.
Which is better for journaling with prompts?
Reflectly's guided-prompt flow is still pleasant if writing is your main thing, and stoic. is the stronger actively-developed prompt journal. MoodKit is not a writing app: notes are short and optional, and the focus is measuring what drives your mood.
